Dr. David Troiano led the Filarets Choir as the members lifted their voices and sang of the Lord's constant love, faithfulness, and truth that lives forever.
His Excellency Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron greeted his fellow Eminences, brother priests, members of the Orchard Lake Schools, lay people, and brothers and sisters of Christ. He gave thanks for all the blessings that have come throughout the ages through Fr. Joseph Dabrowski, founder of the Orchard Lake Schools, Ss. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, St. Mary's College, and St. Mary's Preparatory in 1885, and for all that Orchard Lake Schools have given throughout the last century and a quarter.
In his homily, Archbishop Vigneron mentioned that he is an alumnus and past faculty member of Orchard Lake and expressed that it is a great grace to serve in the sacrament of the Mass. He expressed
the hope that all those present might celebrate more worthily the great gift - to help fill their hearts with praise and thanksgiving for this day.
Archbishop Vigneron remembered Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko. He also remembered Pope John Paul II and cited him as saying that Polonia is a gift from God - the incarnate unity of faith and culture . . . the very flesh and blood of a very particular people living the Word. He recognized in Polonia the marvel of a noble people made all the more noble by the truth of Christ in the Catholic faith, stating that our forbearers first accepted the faith and incarnated it into their way of life, and it has survived in these schools, neighborhoods, and homes. He reminded those present that each one has some point of contact with the faith.
In closing, the Archbishop said that the Orchard Lake Schools will be faithful to teaching its students to be witnesses to the Gospel and to teaching their neighbors to do the same, as well as to be faithful to their heritage. We also need the Polish Mission to ensure that we continue to be faithful to our heritage and for the conviction to strive for the nobility of those who are created in the image of God.
Along with the gifts of bread and wine, also presented were treasures from the past and present: a framed photograph of Fr. Dabrowski, a primer written by Fr. Dabrowski, two yearbooks, a chalice used by Fr. Dabrowski, and a chalice used by Fr. Witold Buchaczkowski, the second rector of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, who moved the rectory to its present location in 1909.
Among those present and participating in the Mass were His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida, former Archbishop of Detroit; His Eminence Edmund Cardinal Szoka, former Archbishop of Detroit; Most Rev. Dale J. Melczek, Bishop of Gary, Indiana; Most Rev. Francis R. Reiss, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit; Msgr. Stanley E. Milewski, Chancellor Emeritus of the Orchard Lake Schools; Rev. Gary M. Michalik of St. Colette in Livonia; Rev. Walter J. Ptak of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Wyandotte; and Rev. Lawrence Zurawski of St. Damian in Westland.
