In this issue of The Polish Weekly (Tygodnik Polski) we have a review of the new Jerzy Hoffman film Battle of Warsaw 1920. The film reviewer is Peter Hetherington who is the author the new book Unvanquished: Joseph Piłsudski, Resurrected Poland and the Struggle for Eastern Europe. After reviewing his splendid book and having extensive conversations with Mr. Hetherington, the paper decided to ask him to review the new Hoffmann film.

O czym rozmawiają Polacy? Najczęściej o pogodzie. To jest najbardziej bezpieczny temat, jesień zaskakująco łaskawa, nie można narzekać. Ale my lubimy narzekać, pojawiają się więc polityczne wątki. Z tymi jednak należy delikatnie się obchodzić, bo wszystko dokładnie jest poplątane. Twoi znajomi wczoraj byli "kaczyści", dzisiaj są "ziobryści", o pomysłach posła Palikota lepiej nic nie mówić, bo uwodzą go i z prawa i z lewa (w zależności od własnych interesów), w Sejmie coraz częściej tupią, rechoczą, wychodzą gęsiego jak im się coś (albo ktoś) nie spodoba; tylko szary obywatel wyborca zastanawia się na kogo tak naprawdę głos oddał. Nawet zdeklarowani "palikotowcy" główkują, że zostali wpuszczeni w maliny, bo nie zdawali sobie sprawy jak będzie wyglądała sejmowa drużyna Ruchu Palikota.

It was called Autumn Rhapsody, and after about six months of preparation, our gamble with a new theme paid off! Balcerowicz Lectures on European financial crisis at U of M

Leszek Balcerowicz was a recent guest lecturer at the University of Michigan, Oct. 26. Balcerowicz was a high level official in Poland’s economic transition to a market economy. While his presentation was entitled, “The Future of Europe”, Balcerowicz demonstrated his range of knowledge, citing statistical GDP and other evidence over a span of time, including not only the European countries, but also comments on the Asian countries and the United States. “The ultimate solution is not crisis lending,” he emphasized. “You can grow without a credit boom,” and he pointed to countries like Germany and the Czech Republic as having a consistent record of spending discipline. Pointing to the “boom to bust” phenomenon, Balcerowicz maintained that countries with “lesser spending booms suffer less”.
American debut of Chopiniana virtuoso

Young Marcin Kulesza made a special trip to the United States to play for the Chopiniana event at the American Polish Cultural Center in Troy, Nov. 6. His talent and training were evident in a delicate yet resounding rendition of many of Frederyk Chopin’s compositions.
“His pianos and pianissimos were like the touch of velour and the notes of fast passages, as even as pearls,” said Hanna Leja, a guest from Owosso.

Congratulations to director Piotr Uzarowicz.
The 2011 Ewa Pieta* Award for the best non-feature film was presented to director Piotr Uzarowicz for "The Officer's Wife". This year's recipient was selected by independent votes of eight jurors representing the audience.
Chopiniana 2011

W minioną niedzielę, 6 listopada, w sali Amerykańsko Polskiego Centrum Kulturalnego odbyła się 19. Chopiniana. Zapoczątkowane przez śp. Noreen Śmiałek Sinclair spotkania z muzyką Chopina są kontynuowane. Dobrze się stało, że kontynuacji tego pięknego dzieła skrzypaczki Noreen, podjęła się pani Barbara Lisiecka. Udowodniła już po raz drugi, że jest godną następczynią Noreen. Basi Lisieckiej dzielnie asystuje córka, Oleńka Lisiecka oraz grono przyjaciół. Sala była gustownie ozdobiona, białe lwie paszcze jak gdyby tylko na chwilę przysiadły w pięknych wazonach, bowiem za chwilę miał się rozpocząć koncert. Gości witał znany już uczestnikom Chopiniany, Harry Hovakimian grając na skrzypcach sentymentalne utwory.
